93rd Washington FFA Convention & Expo Update

Good afternoon FFA Advisors,

We are just 93 short days away from the opening gavel of the 93rd Washington FFA Convention & Expo in Kennewick! All things state convention have been updated on our website under the "Convention" tab. This includes registration details, schedule of events, and convention hotel block information.

Key Items to Note:

  • After review of the convention budget, the Washington FFA Board of Directors approved an increase in convention registration fees from $50 to $75 per person

  • State convention registration will open on March 1st and close on April 15th. We will again use JudgingCard for registration. Advisors need to register students for attendance AND their respective contests within the same registration portal.

  • Housing blocks for convention are open now through April 19th. After this date hotels are not obligated to honor block negotiated rates. We are continuing to add additional hotels to this list over the next few weeks.

  • A draft schedule of events has been posted for reference and scheduling. These dates/locations are subject to change. Any material changes will be communicated and updated on the schedule as things are finalized.

We're looking forward to celebrating Washington FFA members and chapters across the state. Best of luck as you take on the craziness that is springtime as an FFA Advisor!

Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Thanks,

Dany

Awards Application Training Resources

FFA Advisors,

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend our Award Application Trainings workshops in January! We hope to continue these learning opportunities for our advisors.

For those of you unable to attend, we wanted to make the presentation materials and handouts available to all advisors. The materials including an FAQ compiled from both trainings have been linked below for reference:

As always, feel free to reach out to Lisa, Tamara, or myself with any questions or issues around award applications.

Spring WA FFA Event Updates

All,

Below is important information regarding non-convention FFA events we have coming up. Please read carefully. Details about Convention CDEs/LDEs will be provided at a later date.

CDE REGISTRATION:

Registration for all non-convention CDEs will officially open on January 15th. We will again be using Judging Card for these events. There are multiple ways you can access the registration.

  1. To access the event calendar directly through Judging Card, click here

    • Click on the month of the event

    • Scroll to the date and click on the event name

  2. To access individual events through the state website, click here

    • Scroll to CDE regististration

    • Each event has an individual registration link that can be clicked on to register

Important information needed for registering:

  1. Make sure you have a Judging Card login.

  2. Make sure your email is correct in Judging Card.

    • Once registration closes, coordinators and I will contact you through the email listed in Judging Card. If it is incorrect, you may not receive important updates.

  3. Members need to have been submitted to the state on your roster in order for names to auto populate.

  4. Registration for all pre-convention CDEs will close two weeks prior to the event at 9:59 PM (11:59 Central Time).

  5. When registering two teams, please register your Team 1 under the event name "Team 1" and your second team uner event name "Team 2", this will allow us to easily see which member is on which team.

  6. To check your registration status, log into your Judging Card Account. Click on "Event Registration and Information" (Calendar Icon), then click on "List of My Entries" on the top right side of the page. There you will be able to see all events that your chapter is currently registered for.

  7. I will continue to send reminders one week before and the day of registration closing.

CDE UPDATES:

  1. Horse Evaluation-Due to construction at the Kittitas Valley Event Center not being completed, state horse will not be held in Ellensburg. We are finalizing details but tentatively it will be April 26th in Kittitas, WA. Look for more details shortly.

  2. Vet Science-There is going to be a MAJOR overhaul to the Vet Science CDE at nationals next year. Find more information here.  After much discussion with our state coordinator, at this time it is not feasible to make all these changes at the state level for 2023. However, we will make the name changes/corrections and deletions from the ID list that nationals has released. This seemed to be an easy step to get us on track to make more changes next year. The handbook has been updated on the state website to reflect these changes. No additions will occur until 2024 (these are listed in the handbook but clearly marked as being added in 2024).

AGRISCIENCE FAIR:

  1. Registration will be through Judging Card, opening January 15th. Written materials and registration will be due March 15th at 9:59 PM.

  2. Presentations will be at the Puyallup Spring Fair on April 22nd, 2023. More information to follow.

  3. The handbook has been updated on the website to remove the "state information" section that was listed. It would direct those reading it to the FFA superintendent from the Spring Fair who is no longer there.

MEMBER LEADERSHIP SERIES:

Attached you will find a flyer for our Member Leadership Series. Registration will also open January 15th with an email to come that day with the jotform link.

Washington FFA Applications - Now Open!

Happy New Year!

Applications for various degrees, awards, honors, and leadership opportunities are open and available as of today!

We have put considerable effort into ensuring that processes and materials are available on our website and clearly outlined to eliminate confusion. All information for the various applications can be found on our website under the Student or Advisor tabs. I have also included links below for reference.

Noteworthy changes for 2023:

1)     American Degree Applications are due March 1, 2023. Applications are submitted electronically via the National FFA Application Center.

2)     State Star battery forms are available for download on our website. The battery form plus the required application materials will be uploaded via JotForm. Due March 1, 2023.

3)     The State Star Finalists review process will include a virtual interview with the state selection committee early April.

4)     District Review Results need to be submitted to Tamara Whitcomb using this template: Washington FFA District Review Results Template.

All applications are submitted electronically through the National FFA Application System or JotForm, no applications need to be printed or placed in the mail. Due dates for each application are listed on our website, any late or incomplete applications will not be accepted (this includes signature pages).

As a reminder, each District within the state is responsible for hosting a review of all district applications by FFA Advisors for the following: State Degrees, Proficiency Awards, and District Stars. Upon completion of the review and before March 1, 2023, one designated representative for the district is to submit the results of the district review on the Washington FFA District Review Results Template to Tamara Whitcomb (tamara.whitcomb@k12.wa.us). The state-led FFA Award Application Review will be happening in person this year on March 4, 2023, from 8:30 am–1:00 pm at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.

Thank you again for the work you do for your students. If you have any questions about awards, degrees, leadership opportunities, etc. please don’t hesitate to contact Tamara Whitcomb, Lisa Baser, or Dany Payne.
